Terraforming and Landscaping in Minecraft [A Beginner’s Guide]

Terraforming and landscaping in Minecraft can transform your world into a breathtaking, personalized masterpiece. Whether you’re building mountains, rivers, or cozy gardens, this guide will help you understand the basics and enhance your creativity.

It is frequent when developing in Minecraft to need to make adjustments to the natural environment around you. This might be as basic as leveling ground for a house or as complex as constructing a lake or mountain. This post will teach you how to landscape and terraform Minecraft more successfully.

Terraforming and Landscaping in Minecraft [Guide for Beginners]

We did a wonderful workshop last weekend (not the Redstone workshop from yesterday) where a group of folks got together and constructed mountains! At least, little mountains. After all, the workshop was just an hour long.

What Is Terraforming in Minecraft?

Terraforming refers to modifying and shaping the natural environment in Minecraft to suit your design or build vision. Landscaping involves smaller-scale changes like creating gardens, pathways, or small water features.

When building a mountain in Minecraft, there are three approaches to consider, and when all three are combined, you'll have fantastic terrain!

In Minecraft, how do you flatten land?

Without mods, you will have to manually flatten land in survival mode. This may appear to be a lot of labor, but it may be greatly accelerated by using higher-grade tools (such as diamond or netherite shovels and pickaxes), enchanted tools (efficiency and unbreaking), and beacons.

Using better tools is clear, however many gamers overlook the use of beacons! When combined with Efficiency tool enchants and Haste II on a beacon, you can destroy most blocks almost rapidly (including stone).

If manually flattening land becomes too laborious, modules such as the RFTools "Builder" machine can be used to remove blocks. Using modifications is a nice compromise between "cheating" by using commands to clean areas and manually clearing the entire region. It still takes some work to set up since you need to power the machine to clear the obstructions. As an extra bonus, the building machine in this mod can clear specified forms (such as spheres), which is really useful.

Finally, the most convenient approach to flatten land in Minecraft is to utilize commands (WorldEdit mod/plugin) or creative mode. When using commands, you may choose a cubic area to entirely wipe away fast, and in creative mode, you can instantly shatter any block without using any tools.

Terraforming Hills in Minecraft

To make an existing hill appear more beautiful in Minecraft, smooth out each layer of the hill one by one. The Minecraft world generates incredibly jagged and random slopes, but hills in real life are gentler owing to many years of natural sculpting from the environment. To eliminate the jaggedness from hills, draw long, sweeping lines and circles.

If you want to create a new hill or expand an existing hill to make it taller, you should use the same rationale. Build the hill layer by layer, beginning from the bottom and working your way up to the required height. Allow less space between each layer for a steeper hill.

In Minecraft, learn how to Terraform Water (Lakes, Ponds, and Rivers)

Making a new body of water around the globe might be difficult, especially if you don't want it to look man-made. You should use the same logic as when creating a hill, however, in this instance, you'll be digging out the region rather than building it up.

In the video above, we demonstrate how to construct a very simple pond in a flat piece of grass. The pond gets deeper towards the center and is made up of sand, clay, stone, and gravel to give it a more natural aspect.

Below is some additional advice on how big to make your body of water:

  • Ponds: shallow water (1-3 blocks deep) that is not overly wide.
  • Lakes have deeper water (1-3 blocks deep at the shore and much deeper in the middle). Larger than a pond and may take on several forms such as an oval or crescent.
  • Rivers are long, deep, and narrow. Typically 1-2 blocks deep along the beach and rapidly deepening towards the center.

Fill the whole bottom of your dug-out space with water first (using a bucket). Once you've completed the bottom layer, repeat for each layer until you reach the top of your pond. You might find it useful to construct some temporary dirt blocks against which to pour the water.
