How to Find, Tame, and Feed Axolotls in Minecraft—A Complete Guide.

Axolotls can be attached to leads and are passive toward players. They deal two points of damage per attack on the majority of aquatic mobs, including hostile ones like guardians and drowned. Axolotls may play dead when attacked, regaining their health while avoiding hostile mobs. After killing a mob that is battling an axolotl, players have their Mining Fatigue eliminated and receive Regeneration I for five seconds per axolotl in combat (up to two minutes).

Locating Axolotls

Axolotls inhabit Lush Caves, identifiable by surface-level azalea trees. To find them:

  1. Seek Azalea Trees: These trees indicate the presence of lush caves beneath.
  2. Explore Underground: Enter caves below Y-level 63 to discover water pools where axolotls spawn.
  3. Ensure Darkness and Clay: Axolotls spawn in complete darkness with clay blocks beneath the water.

Feeding Axolotls

Axolotls have a specific diet, preferring live tropical fish. To feed them:

  1. Craft a Bucket: Use three iron ingots to create a bucket.
  2. Collect Water: Fill the bucket by right-clicking on a water source.
  3. Catch Tropical Fish: Locate tropical fish in warm ocean biomes or lush caves. Equip the water bucket and right-click on the fish to capture it.
  4. Feed the Axolotl: Approach an axolotl and right-click with the bucket of tropical fish. Hearts will appear, indicating successful feeding.

Note: Axolotls only respond to live tropical fish in buckets; regular fish items or fish caught via fishing rods are ineffective.

Breeding Axolotls

To breed axolotls and expand your aquatic companions:

  1. Prepare Two Buckets of Tropical Fish: Each axolotl requires its own bucket for feeding.
  2. Find Two Adult Axolotls: Ensure they are in proximity.
  3. Feed Each Axolotl: Use the buckets of tropical fish on both axolotls. They will enter "love mode" and produce a baby axolotl.

With a 0.083% chance of being the elusive blue variety, baby axolotls inherit the color of one parent. Their growth is accelerated by feeding them more buckets of tropical fish, but they mature in 20 minutes.

Keeping Axolotls as Companions

While axolotls can't be tamed like wolves or cats, you can keep them as companions:

  • Transport: Use a water bucket to pick up and relocate axolotls.
  • Leads: Attach a lead to guide them on land, but ensure they return to water within five minutes to prevent them from perishing.
  • Aquatic Habitats: Create a pond or aquarium at least two blocks deep to house axolotls, preventing them from wandering off.

You can add these fun aquatic companions to your Minecraft experience by learning how to find, feed, and breed axolotls.
