After 10+ years of searching, Minecraft Alpha 1.1.1, an extremely rare version, was finally discovered.
After 10+ years of searching, Minecraft Alpha 1.1.1, an extremely rare version, was finally discovered.

People have been looking for Alpha 1.1.1 for 10 years

On June 30, 2010, Minecraft was updated to version Alpha 1.1.1. This update was removed from the servers on July 1st of that same year, a mere two days after release, and has not been seen since.

The update's sudden disappearance forced players to find other ways to play online with one another; many were forced to re-download older versions of the game in order to recreate the server environment they had become accustomed to in Alpha 1.1.1. If a player wanted their friends' new IP addresses manually entered into their client, they'd have to print out an image of it by hand (if you're wondering how old I am: this is what I did).

The first time I found out about this mysterious version number was when someone mentioned it on Reddit last month, at which point my suspicions were immediately confirmed when several other users posted screenshots showing what appeared to be them playing 1-digitized versions of themselves inside Minecraft's jungles and caves.

The reason why it was so hard to find is that the update wasn’t pushed to all players

The reason why it was so hard to find is that the update wasn’t pushed to all players. Instead, it was only pushed to a few select players as part of an internal test. This means that there were a lot of people who had access to the update but didn't know about it.

The reason they kept this information secret is that they wanted to make sure that everything worked correctly before releasing it on an official level. They knew there would be some problems with the release, so they decided not to announce anything until things were ready for everyone

A much more recent version of Minecraft was updated when Alpha 1.1.1 was found

The update to Alpha 1.1.1 was just one part of a much larger update that took place that day, which also updated Minecraft’s beta version to Beta 1.2.1 (this was the last time that beta and alpha versions were updated on the same day). The most significant changes this patch made were bug fixes:

  • A bug caused creepers to spawn in “extreme difficulty mode.”

  • Another bug caused items not to drop when they should have

  • A lighting issue with torches was fixed

As well as some improvements:

  • Texturing and lighting were improved. * Item sprites were updated (*Note: This change was actually made before Alpha 1.1 but did not take effect until this update.)

Some people are having trouble re-downloading and playing it due to the servers being too old

If you're having trouble downloading and playing the game, it might be because the servers are too old. The original Minecraft server was written in Java and stopped getting updates in 2010.

The good news is that there's an alternative: CraftBukkit is a new project built on top of Minecraft 1.1.1 that works with modern versions of Java, as well as older ones like 1.5 or 32-bit JRE 7 (the version used by older Minecraft versions).

Minecraft Alpha 1.1.1 has been discovered!

For the first time in 10 years, Minecraft Alpha 1.1.1 has been discovered! This version of the game was released to select users and not all players, meaning it was extremely difficult to find. However, a recent update led to this old version being uncovered.

Several versions of Minecraft have been released since Alpha 1.1.1 was first introduced, but now you can play the very first public build of what would become one of gaming's most popular titles ever!
